Gary Werner
Born: Gary Allison Werner

To Whom: Alex and Adelma Werner of Neche, North Dakota
Where: Grafton, North Dakota
Siblings: One brother, Cleon Stewart Werner of Wichita, Kansas
Gary was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Christ Lutheran in Neche, North Dakota.
As early as the 4th grade, Gary wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from high school, he attended Mayville State Teachers College. In 1962, he began his 35-year teaching career in St. Tomas, North Dakota.
Gary met his wife, Mavis, at Mayville State and they were married in August of 1962. To this union were born four children, Guy, Glenn, Mary, and Marcia. At the time of this writing, they have 14 grandchildren.
Because Minnesota claimed they paid teachers a much higher wage, in 1964, Gary took a teaching position in Fertile, Minnesota. Where he continued to teach for 33 more years.
Gary has been very active in our community; on the EMS roster for 19 years, financial secretary for his church for 19 years, President of Lions Club, Jaycees, Cub Master for Pack 185 for 19 years, a head negotiator Conference 3 of his church for 20+ years.
Gary has tried his hand at many different jobs during his healthy years. He hoed sugar beets, worked in a grocery store, worked for a lumber yard in Neche as well as the Fertile Building Center, he enjoyed working for a very organized neat farmer near Neche and later for Chuck Berhow at Fertile. He sold “Child Craft/World Book Encyclopedias”, he spent many summers painting, building decks, siding, shingling with the Braun, Netland crew. They were often call the “three stooges”. There must have been a reason for the title???
Gary has always been a lover of music. When in college, he would stop at the music store in Grafton, ND nearly every Friday night on his way home to Neche and pick up one “45” record. He has quite a collection of vinyl’s. I would have to say about 97% Country Western.
Gary liked to challenge himself at fixing his own cars, assembling his own stereo system, building our own kitchen oak cupboards, wiring our houses, he would try anything.
For nearly 10 years, Gary’s eyesight has been failing. He has had 11 eye surgeries and a cornea transplant to no avail. Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration took its toll.
Gary entered Fair Meadow on July 12, 2018.
